This is a content-based course where students’ active participation is welcome. What does it mean to “open a window “???? You get some view of the outside, right? So, the vision I have for this course is to encourage you to open NEW (virtual) windows, to see situations or issues related to European histories, cultures and societies from A NEW ANGLE. Through the use of original materials based on video footage, feature films, songs and articles, recent topics have included etymology of English words, English proficiency in non-English speaking regions, the impact of colonisation & the slave trade, while reviewing grammar patterns from Intermediate Level upwards like the use of idioms, and making efforts to unlearn common errors of pronunciation or vocabulary forms. Students are encouraged to relate the selected topics to aspects of Japanese history & culture, thereby bridging East & West. Reading in English will help you acquire vocabulary. If you spend time reading the handouts before class, you will enjoy the course more!
